Detroit Association of Black Storytellers

The Detroit Association of Black Storytellers (DABS), an affiliate of The National Black Storytellers Association, recently celebrated its founders; my wife Maxine is a member of this prestigious organization. The main focus of DABS is to carry on the rich oral African traditions of storytelling. Their creative performances are held throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. Fortunately, I had my camera present as DABS members (griots) paid homage to the last surviving founder of the group, while sharing their unique stories, laden with comedy, morality, humor, myth and spirituality with the audience. Whether the members presentations were steeped in Black dialect, music, oral tradition, poetry, drama, comedy, or filled with expressions, they each managed to spin stories that engaged the audience and yet held fast to all the attributes unique to the art and traditions of African storytelling.
